Signs You Need Shock or Strut Replacement
Suspension wears slowly, so the signs are easy to miss:
- Bouncing more than once after a bump
- Nose-diving when you brake or squatting when you accelerate
- Body roll or sway in turns and crosswinds
- Clunking or rattling over bumps, often ball joints, bushings or sway bar links
- Harsh thuds or “bottoming out” over bumps and dips
- Oil leaking down the side of a shock or strut
- Cupped or uneven tire wear
- Pulling to one side or loose, wandering steering
- Vibration or a harsh, jarring ride
Icy roads, spring potholes, heavy loads and off-road trips all speed up suspension wear. Worn parts also lengthen stopping distances, so don’t put off an inspection if you notice these signs.
Suspension Parts We Service
Your suspension isn’t just about comfort. It keeps your tires planted for steering, braking and stability, whether you’re commuting on State Street, towing a trailer or heading up Provo Canyon. Here’s what each part does and what we check:
- ShocksDampen bumps and body movement. Replaced in pairs when they leak, rattle or clunk.
- StrutsA shock and spring in one structural part. Leaks, noise or a bouncy ride mean a new pair.
- SpringsCarry the vehicle’s weight. Sagging or broken coils change ride height and handling.
- Ball jointsThe pivot points your wheels steer on. We check for torn boots and looseness.
- Control armsConnect the wheels to the body and hold alignment. We look for bends and worn bushings.
- Bushings & sway bar linksAbsorb vibration and limit body roll, and a common source of clunks when worn.
How Much Does Shock or Strut Replacement Cost in Orem?
Cost depends on whether your vehicle has shocks, struts or both, how many need replacing, and the parts you choose. Struts usually cost more than shocks because they’re a structural part of the suspension, and we replace them in pairs so the car handles evenly. An alignment is usually needed after strut replacement. We inspect first and quote the full job, alignment included, before any work begins.
We keep our prices competitive and upfront: you get an estimate and approve it before any work starts.
Need to spread out the cost? Master AutoTech offers several financing options, including the Goodyear Credit Card (6-month special financing on purchases of $250 or more), the Synchrony Car Care credit card, the 1stMILE Mastercard, Snap Finance, Acima, Surepay and RC Willey financing.

How Often Should You Replace Shocks and Struts?
Most shocks and struts last 50,000 to 100,000 miles. Potholes after Utah winters, towing, heavy loads and gravel roads shorten that. We recommend a suspension inspection once a year, ideally with your alignment.
| Condition | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Normal driving | Inspect yearly; replace around 50,000–100,000 miles |
| Towing or heavy loads | Inspect every 6 months |
| After a hard pothole or curb hit | Inspect as soon as possible |
| New tires | Check suspension so worn parts don’t ruin new tread |

What Orem Drivers Say
“I took my van in last week with a couple of issues. This was the best experience I have had with them. They communicated very well. They were friendly and informative. They were easy to work with… Maybe one of the best experiences I have had with any mechanic.”
Jason McCune
“Master Muffler got me in when I thought my muffler needed to be replaced. When I arrived for my appointment they got my truck in within minutes, put it on the lift and the technician saw the problem. It was a quick fix with a weld to put two pipes back together. I paid and was on my way in 20 minutes. I was so pleased that there was no upselling. My truck is quiet again, the cost was reasonable and I was treated so well. I will be back.”
Shauna Hatch
“I’ve been taking all my vehicles here for the last 5 years or so. They always do an efficient job! You do not need to worry about dishonesty when it comes to these guys. After taking my car for oil changes elsewhere and getting screwed over I even take my car here for just oil changes. Thanks for the great work!”
