Chances are you spend a pretty significant amount of time in your car, and you’re going to experience some of life’s problems when you’re on the road from time to time. Whether you have a breakdown, or spill an entire Slurpee in your lap, carrying a few basic essentials in your trunk can really help you out in a pinch. Here’s a list of what we think everyone should be carrying in their car at all times:

Tools: There are a lot of times where you can take care of minor mechanical problems if you just have the right tools in your car. Changing a tire or jumping a battery are pretty easy if you’re prepared. The basic tools you need to keep in your car are jumper cables, a tire changing kit (probably came with your car), basic hand tools, duct tape and a tow strap.

Food and Water: You should have at least a 24 hour supply of non-perishable food and water in your car at all times. Protein bars, jerky, and emergency food supplies are all good choices. Keep plenty of water for you and passengers to drink as well, plus an extra gallon on the side. Rotate food and water supplies regularly.

First-Aid Kit: If someone gets hurt while you’re out and about, a first aid kit can literally be a life saver. Basic first-aid kits include bandages, a CPR mouthpiece, cleansing pads, and a dose of aspirin. Other handy items include super glue and tape. Keep a blanket with your first-aid kit as well.

Flares: You’re going to need them if you’re broke down on the side of the road at night. Keep a lighter in your car as well.

Flashlight: You’ll need this for changing tires and about a hundred other things if you run into trouble at night.

A Change of Clothes: Spilled Slurpees are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to reasons why you might need a change of clothes. Even if your trip just takes longer than you expected, and you end up stopping for the night somewhere, you’ll be glad to have fresh clothes.

A Spare Cell Phone: Cell phones have a knack for going dead at exactly the wrong time, so always keep a fully charged spare in your car. It doesn’t need be fancy, or even have a service subscription. It only needs to be charged to be able to connect you with 911.
