How Salt Lake County Emissions Testing Works
Salt Lake County requires an emissions test for most gasoline and diesel vehicles to renew registration. Your renewal notice tells you whether your vehicle needs one this year. Here’s what to expect:
- Bring your vehicle and registration renewal notice. The test is tied to your VIN and plate.
- We connect to your vehicle’s computer. On 1996 and newer vehicles, the test reads the on-board diagnostic (OBD-II) system and readiness monitors.
- Results are sent electronically. A pass is reported to the state so you can renew online.
- If it fails, we explain why. You’ll get the codes and our recommendation before any repair.
Common Reasons Vehicles Fail Emissions
These are the repairs we see most often after a failed test:
- Check engine light on
- Faulty oxygen sensors
- Failing catalytic converter
- Loose or damaged gas cap
- EVAP system leaks
- Engine misfires from plugs or coils
- Readiness monitors not set after a battery change
Tip: if you recently replaced the battery or cleared codes, drive normally for a few days before testing so the monitors can reset.
How Much Does Emissions Testing Cost in Riverton?
Emissions test fees are set by the county, so the price depends on where your vehicle is registered. If your vehicle fails, repair cost depends on the cause: a gas cap or sensor is a small repair, while a catalytic converter is a bigger one. We always show you the codes and quote the repair before starting.
Need to spread out the cost? Master AutoTech offers several financing options, including the Goodyear Credit Card (6-month special financing on purchases of $250 or more), the Synchrony Car Care credit card, the 1stMILE Mastercard, Snap Finance, Acima, Surepay and RC Willey financing.
Emissions Repairs We Handle
- Oxygen and air-fuel ratio sensors
- Catalytic converters (see muffler & exhaust)
- EVAP purge and vent valves, hoses and gas caps
- Ignition coils, spark plugs and misfire repair
- EGR valves and passages
- Exhaust leaks ahead of the oxygen sensors
Environmental Responsibility
The Salt Lake Valley’s winter inversions trap pollution in the valley, and vehicle emissions are a big part of it. Keeping your vehicle in spec isn’t only a registration requirement; it helps keep Salt Lake County air cleaner and usually improves fuel economy too.
What Riverton Drivers Say
“Fantastic shop. Quality of work is great, prices are good, and the employees are kind and courteous. They fixed the A/C in my wife’s car, and did an alignment for us. They also gave me advice on a not so great DIY repair. I can’t say enough good things about these guys.”
Matt Banks
“Had them do our brakes. We’ve used them a handful of times and they’ve always been honest and a fair price. They have told us other things we need to fix but more than once have told us it’s probably not worth the cost vs. the age of the vehicle, so we are aware and can decide. Got us in more quickly than another place could.”
Deborah Bracken
“Amazing experience. Jay is very kind, quick, and knowledgeable about everything we needed. Good price and he was able to do emissions after fixing me up! Very speedy, quality service. Props to all the guys that work there!”
