Signs You Need AC Repair

A Utah summer is no time to find out your AC is failing. Bring your car in if you notice:

  • Air blowing warm or only slightly cool
  • Weak airflow from the vents, even on high
  • A musty or sour smell when the AC runs
  • Clicking, rattling or squealing when the AC turns on
  • Water pooling on the passenger floor
  • The AC works on the highway but not at idle
  • Cooling that fades after a few minutes

How Much Does AC Repair Cost in Millcreek?

Car AC repair cost depends on what failed. A system that’s simply low on refrigerant costs far less than one with a leaking evaporator or seized compressor. The main factors are the refrigerant your car uses (newer R-1234yf systems cost more to service than older R-134a systems), how hard the leak is to reach, and whether parts like the compressor, condenser or drier need replacing. We test the system first and give you an estimate before any work starts.

We keep our prices competitive and upfront: you get an estimate and approve it before any work starts.

Need to spread out the cost? Master AutoTech offers several financing options, including the Goodyear Credit Card (6-month special financing on purchases of $250 or more), the Synchrony Car Care credit card, the 1stMILE Mastercard, Snap Finance, Acima, Surepay and RC Willey financing.

What Millcreek Drivers Say

“These folks have cared for my cars for years and I highly recommend them. Their quality is very good and they are very good listeners to work with. I highly recommend.”

“I’ve been coming to Millcreek automotive for a long time. They were always fair honest and has always done a good job. I came in recently and was shocked that they changed ownership. Only to learn that they haven’t really changed. They still have the same employees. They just spruced up the place a bit. Good mechanics are hard to find and would definitely recommend this place”

Components of Your Car’s AC System

Knowing the parts makes your estimate easier to understand. A problem with any one of them, or with the switches, relays and wiring that control them, can stop the AC from cooling, which is why we test the whole system first.

  • CompressorThe powerhouse. Driven by the serpentine belt, it pressurizes refrigerant and pumps it through the system.
  • CondenserA radiator for the refrigerant, in front of the engine radiator. It sheds heat so the gas turns back into liquid, which is why your radiator fan runs with the AC on.
  • Receiver-drier or accumulatorFilters debris and moisture out of the refrigerant before they can damage the system.
  • Expansion valve or orifice tubeMost cars use one or the other. Both meter refrigerant and drop its pressure so it can expand.
  • EvaporatorBehind the dash. Expanding refrigerant absorbs heat from the cabin air, and the blower pushes the cooled air out your vents.

How Often Should You Service Your Car’s AC?

Have the AC checked every one to two years, ideally in spring before the heat arrives. A car AC loses a small amount of refrigerant each year, and dry Utah air, road dust and winter salt are hard on condensers and seals. Run the AC for a few minutes every week, even in winter, to keep seals lubricated.

Item Recommended interval
AC performance check Every 1–2 years, before summer
Cabin air filter Every 12,000–15,000 miles
Run the AC A few minutes weekly, year-round

Before the summer heat, ideally in April or May. Sitting in traffic on Highland Drive with the AC blowing warm is miserable, and a small refrigerant leak found early costs far less than a failed compressor.

It depends on the cause. A recharge costs much less than replacing a compressor or evaporator. We test the system first and give you an estimate before any work starts, so you know the price before you approve anything.

Yes. AC repairs at Master AutoTech Millcreek are covered by our 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty* on parts and labor.

The most common causes are low refrigerant from a leak, a failed compressor clutch, a clogged condenser, or an electrical fault like a bad relay or pressure switch. A diagnostic test tells us which one, so you only pay for the fix you need.

It’s safe to drive, but a failing AC usually gets worse. A refrigerant leak or a noisy compressor should be checked soon so it doesn’t damage other parts of the system.

Often, yes. Many systems just need the leak repaired and a proper recharge. We test the system first and recommend the most cost-effective fix.

That usually means there’s a leak. We use leak detection to find where refrigerant is escaping and repair it, so the recharge holds instead of fading again in a few weeks.
