The differential facilitates the spinning of the left and right wheels at different speeds. This may seem strange, but if you think about it, every time you make a turn, the wheel furthest from the turn will have to rotate faster than the wheel inside the turn, because they have a different distance to cover.
Where is the differential located? The differential can be found connecting two wheels with the axle shaft. In a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, there are two differentials connected through a transfer case. The function of the differential in your vehicle is imperative to maintain.
The differential fluid, in your vehicle, is responsible for lubricating the shafts, bearings, and gears in the differential. Over time, this fluid can become old and depleted of additives in the formula. It can also become contaminated by mineral particles, water, and clutch material.
Your favorite Utah auto repair center can replace old differential fluid with new manufacturer-recommended fluid. You will need to request this, because unless you are having a problem with it, it is not something that is automatically checked.
Manufacturers recommend regular replacement of differential fluid. But many people overlook this because, unlike other vehicle fluids, it is challenging and time consuming to change it out. The problem is, neglecting this necessary maintenance can lead to poor performance, wear and tear, and even failure of the differential.
Every 15,000 to 30,000 miles or so, the differential fluid should be totally replaced, preferably with high performance synthetic gear oil. This type of fluid can provide better protection in extreme conditions, and will better reduce friction and corrosion. Doing this will help ensure longevity and better performance from your vehicle’s differential.
