How Davis County Emissions Testing Works

Davis County requires an emissions test for most gasoline and diesel vehicles to renew registration. Your renewal notice tells you whether your vehicle needs one this year. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Bring your vehicle and registration renewal notice. The test is tied to your VIN and plate.
  2. We connect to your vehicle’s computer. On 1996 and newer vehicles, the test reads the on-board diagnostic (OBD-II) system and readiness monitors.
  3. Results are sent electronically. A pass is reported to the state so you can renew online.
  4. If it fails, we explain why. You’ll get the codes and our recommendation before any repair.

Common Reasons Vehicles Fail Emissions

These are the repairs we see most often after a failed test:

  • Check engine light on
  • Faulty oxygen sensors
  • Failing catalytic converter
  • Loose or damaged gas cap
  • EVAP system leaks
  • Engine misfires from plugs or coils
  • Readiness monitors not set after a battery change

Tip: if you recently replaced the battery or cleared codes, drive normally for a few days before testing so the monitors can reset.

How Much Does Emissions Testing Cost in Layton?

Emissions test fees are set by the county, so the price depends on where your vehicle is registered. If your vehicle fails, repair cost depends on the cause: a gas cap or sensor is a small repair, while a catalytic converter is a bigger one. We always show you the codes and quote the repair before starting.

Need to spread out the cost? Master AutoTech offers several financing options, including the Goodyear Credit Card (6-month special financing on purchases of $250 or more), the Synchrony Car Care credit card, the 1stMILE Mastercard, Snap Finance, Acima, Surepay and RC Willey financing.

Emissions Repairs We Handle

  • Oxygen and air-fuel ratio sensors
  • Catalytic converters (see muffler & exhaust)
  • EVAP purge and vent valves, hoses and gas caps
  • Ignition coils, spark plugs and misfire repair
  • EGR valves and passages
  • Exhaust leaks ahead of the oxygen sensors

Environmental Responsibility

The Wasatch Front’s winter inversions trap pollution in the valley, and vehicle emissions are a big part of it. Keeping your vehicle in spec isn’t only a registration requirement; it helps keep Davis County air cleaner and usually improves fuel economy too.

What Layton Drivers Say

“This place is amazing, they did such a wonderful job on my car. I got a new exhaust and now my car sounds like such a badass, and they also have very reasonable and fair prices 10/10 and would definitely recommend to anyone who wants something done to their car!!!”

Jade Lewis

“They’re very nice at this location. Unlike other mechanics I’ve been to, they don’t try to pressure you or upsell you on services. They were straightforward, flexible, and easy to work with. …Overall great experience and if we need anything major done to the cars again we will definitely come back to this location.”

Morgan Duckworth

“Master Muffler in Layton has been so amazing to work with! They were all kind and honest with me about what needed to be fixed on my vehicle. The manager, Mike, went above and beyond to help me with a solution when I was stressed about the price point to make the repairs. This place is honest and very considerate! I will never take my car anywhere else now. Thank you Master Muffler of Layton!”
