It’s always a treat to see a car that has been freshly waxed. Not only does it give your vehicle that clean and shiny look that makes other car owners envious, but it also seals the pores of your vehicle against damaging elements such as rust, dirt, and water vapor. Most experts suggest giving your car a good waxing at least twice a year.
Types of Wax
There are several different types of waxes to choose from:
- Polyglycotes are waxes that are used by professionals and auto manufacturers. They promise to last from two to five years, though most need to be freshened up or buffed periodically in order to maintain their shine.
- Polymer preservatives are waxes that bond with the surface of your car in order to prevent oxidizing or fading. Polymer preservatives are available at most auto supply stores and are supposed to last anywhere from 6 months to one year.
- Hard/paste waxes are highly recommended for your twice-yearly waxes. They provide one of the greatest levels of protection, though they are slightly more difficult to apply.
- Soft waxes and liquid waxes are the easiest to apply, but they do not last as long as the other options. Liquid waxes, in particular, are recommended mostly for touch-ups between more professional-level wax jobs.
How to Apply
Once you have chosen your preferred type of wax, it’s time to apply it to your car. It is vastly important that you thoroughly wash your car before you try to wax it. Even if your car already looks clean, there can be minute particles of dust and other elements on the surface of your car that can scratch the paint if you try to wax it without cleaning them off.
Once your car is clean, start by applying the wax to a small area of your car. Once the wax has been applied, take a terry cloth towel and rub the wax in a circular motion in one direction. Once the hazy surface has been broken up, replace the terry cloth towel with a soft, lint-free cloth (such as a microfiber washcloth or cloth diaper) and rub the wax in the opposite direction. This action will help bring out the best level of shine to our vehicle. Keep repeating until the entire surface of your vehicle has been covered and the excess wax has been rubbed off.
