Gas Gage Illuminated Full

Fuel efficiency is no doubt an important money-saving metric and it has come a long way in a short span of time. According to the EPA, fuel efficiency has increased 29 percent since 2004 and is continuing to improve with time. This figure, of course, is referring to the fleet of combustion engine vehicles currently on the market. Electric vehicles are boasting even greater energy efficiency.

When it comes to gasoline-powered cars, there are some makes and models that have will give you more miles per gallon than others. Here is a list of the most fuel-efficient vehicles that hit the market in 2020 according to U.S. News:

  1. 2020 Hyundai Ioniq – 58 mpg combined – $23,200
  2. 2020 Toyota Prius – 56 mpg combined – $24,325
  3. 2020 Honda Insight – 52 mpg combined – $22,930
  4. 2020 Toyota corolla Hybrid – 52 mpg combined – $23,100
  5. 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid – 52 mpg combined – $28,430
  6. 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid – 48 mpg combined – $25,620
  7. 2020 Toyota Avalon Hybrid – 44mpg combined – $37,000
  8. 2020 Lexus ES Hybrid – 44 mpg combined – $41,810

  10. 2020 Kia Optima Hybrid – 42mpg – $29,310

What Makes a Car Fuel Efficient?

There are a number of factors that influence the fuel economy of a vehicle. One such factor is the car itself. The weight and weight distribution of a vehicle both have a large bearing on engine workload. Not surprisingly, smaller, lighter, sleeker cars require less energy to get from point A to point B. However, we are seeing more and more the increased performance and energy efficiency of larger cars, SUV’s and trucks. This has much to do with improved technology.

These days, advanced technologies are used to boost the distance traveled on each gallon of gas. Such technologies include turbocharging smaller engines. This allows engines to work more efficiently while conserving energy. Engines of old were firing at all cylinders, outputting maximum power, that is not as much the case today.

Another large advancement that has saved consumers big bucks at the pump is the improvement of hybrid vehicles. Hybrid vehicles are a good choice for fuel efficiency because they use two or more distinct types of power— gasoline being just one of them. This allows the vehicle to use less gasoline.

Drive Smart

How you drive also affects your MPG. Avoid punching the gas at low RPMs or in a high gear. Controlled acceleration is always a good idea as it burns less fuel less quickly and also keeps your engine healthier over time. It is also important to make sure your vehicle is well-maintained as fuel economy can diminish over time if proper care is neglected. Here are some additional tips:

  • Drive with less weight. Clear out the clutter as more weight requires more energy.
  • Limit idling. Surprisingly, idling uses much more fuel than stopping and starting your car.
  • Keep your speed steady. After reaching 45 mph, your car begins to lose fuel efficiency. Therefore, it’s best to drive the speed limit in residential areas.
  • Check tire pressure. Driving with underinflated tires can increase fuel consumption by as much as 3%.
  • Again, perform regular maintenance. Always make sure your engine is performing at its best.
