An automatic transmission is responsible for delivering power from the engine to the drive wheels in a way that provides the best efficiency and power for your driving speed. The transmission gears are covered with a special transmission fluid that cools and lubricates them, allowing them to work at their optimal level.
An automatic transmission normally creates an extreme level of internal heat due to friction, and transmission fluid is designed to work within a car’s normal temperature range. However, there are several factors that can push the transmission fluid beyond its safety zone. Things such as driving in the mountains, towing a trailer, driving at high speeds in hot weather, and the everyday stop and go traffic can all push the temperature of the fluid past its limits. It is here, when the fluid is overheated, that problems can occur.
An issue with your transmission fluid can damage the transmission of your car – a repair that can prove to be highly expensive. The easiest way to prevent these problems is to have your transmission fluid regularly replaced by a Utah auto repair shop.
Luckily, transmission fluid does not need to be replaced as often as other automotive fluids. Unlike oil, your transmission fluid does not get easily contaminated and does not need to be changed as often.
Since every vehicle will have a different recommendation as to when the transmission should be changed, the best way to learn when you should have the service done on your car is to consult your owner’s manual. There should be a schedule that sets a recommended maintenance check up. If there is no recommendation, or you no longer have your manual, then talk to your Utah auto repair mechanic for suggestions. Typically it is advised that transmission fluids should be changed out every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.
This simple step is important in keeping your car running efficiently, and to help prevent you the cost and hassle of a larger transmission repair.
