Signs You Need Muffler or Exhaust Repair

Your exhaust usually lets you know when something’s wrong. Here’s what to listen and look for:

  • Louder than usualRumbling or roaring that gets worse on acceleration usually means a hole in the muffler or a pipe.
  • Rattling or pinging underneathOften a loose heat shield, a broken hanger or a muffler that’s rusting apart inside.
  • Rough idle or sluggish startsAn exhaust leak or restriction can upset the engine, especially right after startup.
  • Vibration in the floor or pedalsA leak near the engine or a pipe touching the body can send vibration into the cabin.
  • Hanging or dragging pipesRusted hangers and clamps let the system sag, and the next pothole can break it.
  • Worse fuel economyLeaks throw off oxygen sensor readings, so the engine burns more fuel than it should.

Smell exhaust inside the car? That can mean a carbon monoxide leak. Drive with the windows down and have it checked right away.

How Much Does Muffler and Exhaust Work Cost in Brigham City?

Exhaust repair cost depends on what needs replacing and how much of the system is rusted. A clamp, hanger or gasket is a small job; a muffler, flex pipe or catalytic converter costs more, and custom systems are priced by pipe size, materials and muffler choice. We inspect the whole system and quote only what’s needed.

We keep our prices competitive and upfront: you get an estimate and approve it before any work starts.

Need to spread out the cost? Master AutoTech offers several financing options, including the Goodyear Credit Card (6-month special financing on purchases of $250 or more), the Synchrony Car Care credit card, the 1stMILE Mastercard, Snap Finance, Acima, Surepay and RC Willey financing.

What Brigham City Drivers Say

4.6 ★ · 357 Google reviews

“I’ve worked with Jeremy and Jared over there and both are great people who care about their customers. I definitely have had my share of bad experiences with auto mechanics but not here. I have found them honest in all my interactions to date (several) and quite reasonably priced based upon my experience. They do way more than mufflers and brakes also so don’t let the name hold you back. In fact, I have only seen them for other repairs and maintenance. Will go back!”

Tyson Hemphill

“Jared is the real MVP. Everyone was so nice here and they got us in after breaking down on the highway. Highly recommend this amazing service. Now we can safely get back home.”

Brittney Ramos

“Master Muffler is great. Had some issues with my car and they went above and beyond to take care of it. Jeremy and Jared really are great to work with. Would highly recommend.”

Zenock Bishop

What Does a Muffler Do?

Your muffler quiets the engine. Inside the steel case, tuned chambers and perforated tubes bounce the engine’s sound waves back against each other so they cancel out before the exhaust leaves the tailpipe. It works with the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter and resonator to carry exhaust gases safely out from under the car, so a rusted muffler can do more than make noise: it can leak exhaust, hurt fuel economy and cause a failed emissions test.

Why Utah exhaust systems wear out faster: big swings from hot, dry summers to snowy winters, road salt on I-15 and US-89, and short trips where condensation never burns off, so mufflers rust from the inside out. Catching a small leak early costs far less than replacing a rusted-out system.

Types of Mufflers We Install

The right muffler depends on the sound, performance and fuel economy you want:

Standard (OE-style)

Matches your factory muffler for a direct fit and the quiet, original sound.

Best for daily drivers

Universal

An affordable replacement our techs size and fit to your vehicle, with close-to-stock sound and fuel economy.

Best for budget repairs

High-flow

Better airflow and a deeper tone, putting performance a little ahead of silence.

Best for trucks and mild upgrades

Performance & racing

Chambered or straight-through designs that cut back pressure and free up horsepower. Loud by design.

Best for performance builds

Diesel

Larger mufflers built for diesel exhaust volume, to reduce drone and work with your emissions equipment.

Best for diesel pickups

Master AutoTech custom

Our own branded mufflers, made to handle high heat, pressure and Utah weather, with a look most stock mufflers can’t match.

Best for a custom sound and look

How do I choose the right muffler?

Start with how you use the vehicle. A commuter usually wants quiet and good fuel economy, a work truck needs durability, and a weekend car may want more sound and power. Tell our techs what you drive and what you want to hear, and we’ll recommend options that fit your budget and keep you street-legal. Utah law requires a muffler in good working order that prevents excessive or unusual noise.

Custom Exhaust and Performance Mufflers

Want more sound or better flow? We build custom exhaust in-house, from a simple muffler swap to a full cat-back system, including pipe diameter upgrades on trucks, and we keep your vehicle emissions-legal.

A high-performance muffler still quiets the engine, but it lowers back pressure so exhaust leaves more easily. The engine works more efficiently, which can improve power and throttle response. The biggest gains come from pairing it with a larger-diameter pipe, and many drivers add a cold air intake at the same time.

We install exhaust parts from trusted manufacturers, including:

  • Master Muffler Performance
  • MagnaFlow
  • Flowmaster
  • Borla
  • Corsa
  • MBRP
  • Walker

Catalytic Converter Repair and Replacement

Your catalytic converter turns harmful exhaust gases into less harmful ones, and when it fails, the check engine light comes on and fuel economy drops. We test the converter and the oxygen sensors around it, because a bad sensor or engine misfire can mimic converter failure. If replacement is needed, we install a compliant converter so you pass the first time. Common signs of a failing converter:

  • Check engine light with catalytic efficiency codes (often P0420)
  • Rattling from a broken converter core
  • Rotten-egg or sulfur smell
  • Loss of power going up Sardine Canyon
  • A failed emissions test
