Of course, it’s easy to know when your car needs to see a mechanic once uncommon lights turn on on your dashboard. No one waits to look to get their engine checked once an engine light turns on, for instance. But what are some other common warning signs (that might not be as visual as a flashing light on your dashboard) that you should watch out for?
What’s That Odor?
Just because a warning light hasn’t popped up on your dashboard doesn’t automatically mean nothing is out of sorts with your vehicle. Of course, a car isn’t designed to always smell fresh and clean. It’s easy to assume that an engine oil smell or toasted tire aroma is nothing to worry about. After all, those that drive every day are bound to be familiar and set aside their fears when they catch a whiff of something. However, not every car odor is normal, and it’s best to be highly aware of when you’re sniffing something normal and something that’s a sign of a bigger issue.
For instance, if you’re smelling a clear and foul motor oil scent, this could mean a leak! If, after driving for some time the scent doesn’t dissipate, this could mean your oil or coolant is leaking. If you smell burning rubber, it could mean an important rubber hose is touching something that it shouldn’t. Not sure? If you smell it. Park your car in a clean area. Once you move your vehicle, check for any signs of leaks on the ground. If you see something, it’s time to get your car over to Master Muffler.
How is Your Car Moving?
This might seem like a strange question, but pay close attention to the movement and noises of your car. Regardless of whether your car is a year old or 20 years old, the movement of your vehicle should be relatively smooth. Surging, chugging, stalling, and jerking are all indicators of a bigger problem. Hearing hissing, spitting, and popping are also clear signs that something is amiss. When in doubt, if something sounds or feels different, contact your mechanic immediately.
